| Katyn will forever be engraved in the Polish memory, as a place of senseless slaughter of thousands of Polish POWs by Soviet secret police in 1940. Now, that the Presidential delegation to commemorate the 1940 massacre has crashed nearby, Katyn is, yet again, linked to a great national tragedy.
Most of the 96 victims of the crash represent Polish leadership elite. The loss of the President, Lech Kaczynski, his wife, Maria, nation's top generals, many government officials and members of parliament is likely to cause a major shift in the Polish politics. Lower house speaker, Bronislaw Komorowski, will assume presidential duties until elections are held in June.
In unity with grieving Polish community, Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, declared Thursday, April 15th as national day of mourning.
